An FCC filing has revealed that Sony submitted a 250GB PS3 Slim for testing procedures, suggesting that the platform holder may be readying to announce a second SKU following the 120GB model’s GDC unveiling yesterday.

Testing on the 250GB Slim, the 120GB version and two debug unit models was carried out by the FCC in March. The consoles were submitted by Sony Computer Entertainment America under the guise of Sand Dollar Enterprise.

Sony has also confirmed that it is to phase out the existing 80GB and 160GB PS3 models, while the Slim PS3 will not be backwards compatible with PS2 titles. Additionally, PS3 Slim users will be able to manually upgrade their hard drives, as with older models.

I've added a piece to the story confirming that PS3 Slim users will be able to manually upgrade their hard drives, as with older models.

Yes, the PS3 Slim's hard drive is upgradeable. Check out IGN's unboxing video...they added a clip at the end showing you where the "blue screw" is on the console's underside after asking Sony about it.

Why'd they not release it at the same time as the 120gb Model? Why stop at 250gb?. Lets not beat around the bush, you may as well max it out as soon as you can. Get a 500gb drive in there as soon as possible.

Does anyone know the status of whether the hard drives are swappable by the user, like the first generation PS3's? Then you could just upgrade yourself. Would probably be cheaper in the long run.
