2K: Games Can Conquer Recession

Entertainment market will grow, says global president Christoph Hartmann.

One of the biggest questions regarding the games industry is just how well it can stand up to a recession.

2K Games global president Christoph Hartmann is optimistic that games and the entertainment industry overall will be just fine in the midst of economic turmoil, according to an interview on MCV.

"Traditionally, when the economy does badly, the entertainment market grows," he said. "I don’t see why it should be any different this time.

"The recession is coming, but it’s not only about the sad situation of people worrying if they can pay their mortgage – it’s people wondering if they can still afford to spend £500 to go crazy in Ibiza twice a year."

Analysts have argued that gaming is a highly recession-resistant market, partially due to the bang-for-the-buck factor that games offer. Hartmann agrees. "...Cost-wise for a decent amount of hours of entertainment, it’s cheap. Brutally cheap. The recession shouldn’t have too much of an impact."
