Microsoft spokesman David Dennis said that the firm has sold twice as many Xbox 360 consoles during Thanksgiving week compared to the previous week. Specific figures are yet to be given.
Dennis explained (via VentureBeat) that the increased sales were down to retailers selling Xbox 360 Arcade bundles with cards giving consumers $100 worth of game downloads for Xbox Live Arcade. A $399 Xbox 360 Elite bundle featuring Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 also performed strongly. Dennis said that titles such as Halo 3: ODST and Forza Motorsport 2 are selling well, though he declined to give specific numbers.
Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360, also said that Xbox 360 enjoyed its “biggest sales week of the year”.
Nintendo is reported to have sold over 1.5 million hardware units (which includes Wii, DS and DSi systems) in the U.S. during Thanksgiving week. Of that figure 550,000 consoles are said to have been Wii units.
Sony has yet to release any information about its Thanksgiving sales but we expect to hear something shortly.
Of course the 360 sold more 360s than last week as we get closer to Xmas. I want some real numbers and I want a comparison to last year because as it's been pointed out, it's looking like the 360 is getting schooled this year.
Ruh-roh! The company that loves to crow about stupid year-over-year statistics is down over 35% on Thanksgiving 2008? Cry harder, Greenberg.
Also, I notice that on this story we see tacked onto the end a barely-related ODST video, while over on the PS3 results story we see tacked onto the end not, say, an Uncharted 2 video but instead a cross-referenced rehash of Greenberg's pathetic spin.
Oh, and look! Now it's shown up in the earth-shattering Canadian Halo bundle story, too! How much mileage can Greenby possibly get out of one little Twitter post? I guess we're going to find out!
And what is this to be crowing about, anyway? So your console had its best week of sales over Black Friday and still came in last. Congratulations. So I guess the implication is that you had your best week of sales... and your competitors didn't? Meaning there was some other week during the year when they had even better sales and spanked your 'best week' even harder? Wow, way to go, Greenberg.
This is definitely worth repeating on at least a few more barely-related stories, isn't it, Edge? Come on, you can do it!
The fact Greenberg didn't provide a firm number means that 360 fell below both Wii and PS3 announced figures - otherwise, he surely would have stated the number. My guess is they did around 350K.
