80 to 90 Per Cent Of 2009 Game Sales On Physical Media
Trade association report finds that disc-based game sales vastly outweigh those of digital distribution.
The Entertainment Merchants Association (EMA) have announced that 80 to 90 per cent of games purchased in 2009 were on physical media. Released yesterday, the report’s findings demonstrate player’s continued preference for disc-based software despite the huge growth of the digital download sector.
The report states that overall prerecorded video content sales (which include DVDs, Blu-ray discs and digital delivery) grew 2.8 per cent to 3.5 billion last year. It also reveals that combined DVD and Blu-ray disc sales totaled $17.9 billion in 2009, nine times the revenue generated by digital distribution.
"While there has been a great deal of focus recently on the slippage of revenues in the DVD market, the untold story is that consumers’ embrace of home entertainment remains very strong and packaged media is the preferred delivery instrument," Said Bo Andersen, president and CEO of EMA. "Digital distribution is clearly an important segment of the home entertainment market and will continue to grow in market share in the coming year. While it is tempting for industry outsiders to say ‘disc is dead,’ as the saying goes, reports of its demise are grossly exaggerated."
"EMA is a non profit international trade association which focusses on "advancing the interests of the $33 billion home entertainment industry". Despite this vested interest the report culls data from independent sources such as Adams Media Research, Digital Entertainment Group, The NPD Group, Parks Associates, and ScreenDigest.
The news comes despite the recent liquidation of Chipsworld Ltd, and Game Group’s announcement that sales have dropped 11.4 per cent.
