Nintendo had sold some 800,000 Wii consoles in the U.S. during the Black Friday shopping week, according to a Reuters interview with company president Satoru Iwata.
The announcement of such triumphant sales figures goes against the tide of U.S. consumer trends. According to the International Council of Shopping Centers, November saw the average U.S. retailer experience a year-on-year 2.7 percent drop in sales; the biggest monthly fall since the ICSC began tracking data in 1969.
Fortunately for Nintendo, claims Iwata, the standout success of the Wii lies in its appeal: "When the economy is strong, people tend to buy three things from the top of their wish list. But when things are bad, people often buy only the first thing on their list," Iwata said. "Fortunately for us, a lot of shoppers put our products at the top of their list."
Nintendo’s record of 800,000 unit sales during the Black Friday shopping week (which is over double last year’s figure) was punctuated by the announcement that the Nintendo DS had experienced a 20 percent sales increase over the same period.
Maybe Monster Hunter 3 will help the Wii from ending up (covered) in dust?
Nah... it'll still be covered in dust even when Monster Hunter 3 drops. Damn dust magnet!
top of the purchase list, month after purchase, bottom of the TV stand
Nick... now you see what I'm talkin' about?
And I thought me and Ozzman pre-empted the trolls with our own "trolling"!
Haha, he beat me to it.
I've already exhausted myself discussing at length multiple times my opinion of the Wii. In the end, it seems to be appealing to someone (I bought it twice, sold it twice though) so who am I to criticize?
Good for Nintendo. I thought the Wii would be cooling off by now, but it seems nothing's stopping this thing.
Maybe Dan has taken my spot as Wii hater. ^^
Notice it's always the same people too? They're not happy that there's 800 000 potentially new gamers added to the mix.
And, I would hope the Wiis go at the bottom of the TV stand. Doesn't the TV go on the top of the TV stand? That leaves...............
lol @ "I would hope the Wiis go at the bottom of the TV stand. Doesn't the TV go on the top of the TV stand?" PNWED!
Always the same people indeed. He should just go on and buy a Wii if he doesn't have one, as he clearly can't get enough of it - he never fails to comment on any Wii related story.
800,000 more Wiis to collect dust!
;P
I've just checked, and mine has surprisingly little dust on it despite several months of disuse.
Maybe Nintendo has built in some dust-repellant technology? Just a thought. :)
Funny you mention that cause my 360 has daily use be it video games, a movie, streaming my music or netflix, or just simple browsing of my friend's list/bios/achievements and my 360 gathers a ton of dust. I guess technically a console doesn't ever move no matter how much you play it right.
Lol to the dust repellant technology comment.
or, it could be considered 1.6 million Gamecubes sold, all ready to be taped together in groups of 2.
Yeah sorta like there's only one douche bag that actually owns a 360 but it keeps red ringing on him so he's had to buy millions of them.
LMAO. True, true. There's people on all 3 sides that tend to say some pretty ridiculous things.
Haha! I think I like yours better!
