8,450 game industry workers have been laid off since July 2008, according to M2 market analyst Wanda Meloni.

Writing on Gamasutra, Meloni calculated that 75 percent of the layoffs – about 6,300 – were made in North America, representing 12 percent of the region’s total workforce, with the rest spread across Asia and the UK.

Referencing the closure of developers including Microsoft's Aces Studio and Ensemble Studios, Meloni noted that “a handful of others are on life support, operating with a skeletal workforce and actively looking for buyers."

However, Meloni also said that there is a silver lining to the layoffs.

“The real story here is there are 6,300 industry professionals in North America alone [are] looking for something new. Many people are looking at the current market dynamics and starting their own small development studios. With this desire to branch out on their own, they are part of what I am calling the Gaming Renaissance Movement.

“What these new studios lack in financing and slick marketing, they are making up for in creativity, vision and sheer grit. Many of these startups are self-funded by groups combining their severance packages. However they get going, these talented individuals are making up a next wave of independent studios and are the future of renaissance gaming.”

well pc game devs are doing fine, and pc gaming is ression proof. In fact pc gaming companies are hiring in this ression. World of war craft is the game that is keeping actvisionblizzard alive and well. Another exmaple eve online grew 300 000 gamers. It's not just mmo's that is on fire on the pc.

Just to be clear we should note that eve grew to 300k, not grew 300k. Also, if you're going to claim that mmo's aren't the only big things on the pc, you should list a game that isn't one, since eve obviously is. Not to say that you're wrong, just that it really stood out to me.

"The worldwide game industry is expected to post revenues of $57 billion in 2009, but Western game publishers are finding it increasingly difficult to make a profit. A DFC Intelligence report shows that even though seven select Western publishers had an average increase in revenue of 50% over the past two years, they had an aggregate net loss, with the loss increasing 42% in 2008. These publishers are finding profitability extremely difficult due to a dysfunctional game market, and they face a wide range of problems, including skyrocketing development costs, platform fragmentation, piracy, used-game sales, and lengthy console transitions." quote from this web site

Interesting point dreamhunk. According to history... well, the History Channel anyway, during the Great Depression of the 1930s entertainment didn't suffer at all, even though millions of people had lost their jobs and had their houses reposessed by the banks. It seems that, as you say, PC gaming is recession-proof. Good! At least something is!
