Activision will look to grow its business by making “many” of its products playable on televisions independent of consoles.
Company CEO Bobby Kotick made the revelation at the Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference in San Francisco, where he was delivering a speech about the future outlook and potential growth of the games industry.
"You should expect to see many of our products to be playable on the television independent of a console”, he said, noting that high-end televisions now allow for 1080p streaming of video and digital audio content.
"I think what the untethered Guitar Hero does is it maybe equals the playing field a little bit more and gives you leverage with first parties on downloadable content and the business model," he added, according to IGN.
However, Kotick said that Activision isn’t planning to give up on console development any time soon, noting that existing gaming hardware offers enhanced online experiences and better production value. "There's a lot more life left in the ones we have," he said.
When are Activision's shareholders going to remove this guy?
I think Kotick is right on, with this one. Currently, we only have crappy, legacy games re-packaged in joysticks and sold in Wal-Mart. Game packs like the genesis controller pre-loaded with Sonic 1-4. Imagine a game pack with more power. They could probably do Dreamcast-level hardware for pretty cheap.
Still, I think Kotick is missing a pretty major point, and that is cross compatibility. Systems not only give you power and dev tools, but a wide-spread platform with which many people and their hardware is compatible. If they used entirely open tools like USB connectors and open protocols, that helps the problem, but something tells me that they wouldn't do that. They'd try to close it as much as they could.
AWESOME. If in the future Activision games bypass consoles entirely then it will be even easier for me not to buy or play them! Company CEO Bobby Kotick, much respect.
Wow is this what Greed sounds like?
Of course all publishers one some sort of cloud based solution that kills of used games or even playing newly purchased games as long as you want.
Hopefully consumers are smart enough to see through it and boycott any such system.
Kottick really does know how to rub people up the wrong way, but who are we to say? After all we only buy his games and keep him in a job.
Please Bobby, give up on consoles, pull out right now. I for one have had enough of the endless drip fed of frachise games. The only original IP to note (Rage) Activision dropped like a hot brick!!
I see it's all about money with these fools, Kottick has been left wanting.... Again! I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the idea to cut consoles out of the loop, is to get out of paying license fees to Sony and Microsoft.
New management and a new direction is needed with Activision, they've got the talent on the development side, but the management stinks. Kottick is doing nothing for their reputation. I guess the old axiom is true "If you stay in power long enough, you'll get to watch yourself turn into the bad guy!"
They also dropped Brutal Legend which EA of course picked up. I suspect this guy is going for arse of the year award which he will win hands down.
I think it's about time the consumer by-passed Activision and this joker they have in charge.
