Activision plans “to test and ultimately launch additional online monetisation models” for leading franchises like Call Of Duty.
During the BMO Capital Markets Conference, Activision Blizzard CFO Thomas Tippl was asked whether World Of Warcraft’s subscription-based online model could be used for other franchises like Call Of Duty and Guitar Hero.
"It's definitely an aspiration that we see potential in, particularly as we look at different business models to monetise the online gameplay," he said, according to IGN. "There's good knowledge exchange happening between the Blizzard folks and our online guys.
"We have great experience also on Call Of Duty with the success we had on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. A lot of that knowledge is getting actually built into the Battle.Net platform and the design of that. I think it's been mutually beneficial, and you should expect us to test and ultimately launch additional online monetization models of some of some of our biggest franchises like Call Of Duty."
Tippl also said that he wasn’t concerned about how gamers would react to having to pay for additional features.
"Our gamers are telling us there's lots of services and innovation they would like to see that they're not getting yet. From what we see so far, additional content, as well as all the services Blizzard is offering, is that there is demand from the core gamers to pay up for that.”
The bigger they are, the harder they fall, Activision should remember this saying. Just because they have the top spot at the moment, it doesn't mean they will be there forever.
Why stop them? They will kill their base by a minimum of 80% or more and drive other IP to out perform them. Problem is Activision/MS is stupid enough to entertain this kind of thought. If Sony ever gets there heads out their asses and really embrace online as they should. They could put a real dent into Xbox Live...
Quick everybody! Back to Halo/Killzone!
Activision are officially the new EA. I hope people don't support this worrying development.
As a "core" gamer I'd REALLY like to know what features these other "core" gamers are willing to pay a subscription for! ... or is he just talking shit.
Also, how would a subscription based model work in regards to two platforms where one provides a free online service and another that requires a GOLD subscription? I believe this has already proven a problem....
while i have both a 360 and ps3 i bought the ps3 version of the game because of the free online gaming.i think the 60 € i paid for mw2 are enough for online especially since the campaign is only 5hours.Activision should thank the millions who purchase their games by offering to them more online features for FREE and stop talking shit about people who want to pay more
