Speaking at a conference in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Mike Griffith, president and chief executive officer of Activision Publishing, said it had been “a transformational year” for the games industry, reports MCV.

Activision, which has tripled in size in the last year thanks to the success of franchises such as Guitar Hero and Call of Duty, as well as its recent merger with Vivendi Games, used the event to show off a number of upcoming titles including id Software’s next-gen Wolfenstein, Bond game Quantum of Solace and Spider-Man: Web of Shadows.

As well as updates to existing franchises GH and CoD, the publisher announced a new Transformers game entitled Revenge of the Fallen, which will tie-in with the new Paramount movie, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, according to MCV.

“Our strong and balanced portfolio illustrates our ongoing commitment to delivering top-quality entertainment experiences to broad global audiences,” Griffith said.

“There’s been continued strong growth of hardware, expanding retail shelf space for games, price cuts and extended gaming feature sets that have made games mainstream social entertainment experiences,” he continued.

But, he added, “We’re still only scratching the surface of expanding gaming experience in mainstream entertainment.”

Correction: Nintendo has scraped the surface of the mainstream. Activision has one surprise hit that they are forcefeeding casual audiences, namely Guitar Hero, and is struggling to find a title that can match that success.
