Update: Added Sega comments

Obsidian, developer of the Aliens RPG first announced by publisher Sega in 2006, has confirmed that it is no longer working on the title.

“Rumours have circled around a bit regarding the fate of the Aliens role playing game that Obsidian and Sega had been working on. Unfortunately, it is true that we are no longer working on the game, and we wanted to finally announce that officially to everyone who has been following its development,” wrote the administrator on Obsidian’s official forums.

“We’re going to keep this forum up for another week for archival purposes and to allow you guys to finish up any open threads, and then we will shut it down since it is no longer a product that is in development.”

The title’s cancellation had been rumoured for some time, with ex-designer David Kondor saying in his LinkedIn business networking profile back in February that the third-person title, planned for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, had been canned. At the time Sega told us that his comments were merely rumour and speculation.

Knights of the Old Republic II and Neverwinter Nights 2 developer Obsidian is currently working on Alpha Protocol, an espionage role-playing game for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, while Sega is due to publish Rebellion developed Aliens vs. Predator and Gearbox Software’s Aliens: Colonial Marines, although little has been heard of the last title for some time.

Sega has since issued us the following statement confirming that the Aliens RPG is no longer in production.

"At this point, Sega has no plans to move forward with the Aliens RPG. The Aliens franchise offers us so much content to choose from that we feel it important to take a step back and carefully consider the type of game we want to release.

“We plan to continue working with the Aliens franchise and ask fans to be patient and stay tuned for more information about what Sega has coming out for the Aliens series of games, starting with the upcoming Alien vs. Predator game. We are very excited about and focused on Alien vs. Predator, which promises gamers a fantastic single player game and an equally compelling multiplayer experience. We are confident that it provides all the excitement and fun that the Aliens and Predator fans are looking for."

I am still waiting for a great remake of RESURRECTION, with fine control scheme, polished characters and stunning graphics.

Wasn't there another game based on Aliens (specifically the second movie) in the works, too? More of an action-oriented, squad-based kind of thing?

I seem to remember once upon a time being excited about something based on the second movie and I don't think it was an RPG...? I'm confused.

You have gearboxes:Colonial marines which, depending on WHICH rumor you listen to HAS/ HAS NOT been CANNED. Was looking promising...except for the Bloody Blight that IS QTE events.

Rebellion got their A-team working on new AVP-Off.360 mag. said the demo.they were shown at E3 was good, But Alien movement felt sluggish-more of a determined crawl than the fluid movement of the films-This? needs to be sorted as would totally ruin the sense of panic.

This would have been EPIC!

Was Sega so worried? Black Isle's one of the original western renaissance RPG companies. I'm sure it would have been at least two-thirds-awesome.

I guess they didn't want to take too many people off all those Genesis-to-iPhone ports.

Many people aren't into gaming like we are; they have no idea who Obsidian is. With a Sega logo you might get the stigma of the now downtrodden Sonic series. Valkyrie Chronicles is an excellent title by Sega, yet didn't even break a million. I'm thinking many people would see Aliens as another piece of licensed crap.

This is such disappointing news!

God damn Sega and their ports! The only game now I play that has a Sega logo on it is the Total War series!
