Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes Nintendo will cut the price of the Wii later this year in order to hit its shipment targets.
“Wii supply has finally exceeded demand, so we expect hardware sales to show year-over-year decreases for the first half of 2009,” he said in a research note. “In order to hit its full-year Wii shipment forecast, we expect Nintendo to cut the price of the Wii before [the] holiday, likely to $199.99.”
US Wii sales have just topped 20 million units, according to the platform holder, while worldwide sales have surpassed 50 million.
Last month the company said it expects to sell a further 26 million Wii systems during the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2010.
Noting that a price cut is not an “almighty weapon,” Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said recently that the company plans to address a slowdown of Wii sales by introducing strong new software rather than reducing the cost of its hardware.
Pachter also reiterated his belief that Sony will cut the PS3’s price in the second half of the year, and noted that Microsoft could react, possibly with a cut of its own.
“In the second half of the year, we expect Sony to cut price for the PS3, and if the cut is deep enough, we expect Microsoft to respond (either with bundles or with a price cut of its own, even as Microsoft just introduced a Xbox 360 Elite bundle with free games Halo 3 and Fable II).”
Where did they get this guy..? Nintendo are not going to cut the price of the Wii. They just don't adopt that strategy anymore. If the DS is anything to go by, they'll release new colours of the console in the US Spring next year, possibly bring them to Europe by autumn 2010. End of 2010 they'll announce some 'new' version of the wii which may have a few extra features (built in memory, smaller, remote with motion plus built in) but will be essentially the same console (think DSi) and that will release in 2011 and sell 50 million again.
And Microsoft cutting price..? Why would they..? It's already cheap as chips. Maybe they'll look at some better value bundles (esp. when/if Natal launches) but I can't see the basic arcade SKU getting much cheaper.
There you go Wedbush Morgan, give me a job.
Blimey Patch, you've been busy looking into your crystal ball recently haven't you! As an ex Wii owner I don't give two hoots about a Wii price cut. Even if the price was cut to £50 I still wouldn't buy another one. Infact, Nintendo would have to pay me to have another one. ;-)
At least he didn't get on his "WiiHD" soapbox! Those are the only times I'm tempted to question the almighty Patchy Fog.
Personally, i feel none of the consoles on the market are worth their RRP. All could do with a price cut.
If the Wii were to drop to £99.99, then i'd buy one tomorrow. Until then, i'll just wait for such a price cut.
I can see why you're upset. In the states, I think we are paying about £99 for the Wii - just in US dollars.
:)
I don't know about this year.
Xbox Arcade bundles with Natel for $200/$249 - price drop will happen. I think the value will be perceived as less; even without many games. Until something is offered at the same price point, that can do what the Wii can do & look better doing it, I don't see the incentive to change.
