All Things Digital reports that the download tally – which includes paid and free downloads of Angry Birds plus spin-offs Seasons and Rio – is almost equal to the total number of smartphones activated over the Christmas period. It's more than three times the two million downloads the company saw over Christmas 2010.
VP of franchise development Ville Heijari said: "We're really excited to have such a massive number of new people get acquainted with Angry Birds over the holidays – we have exciting new releases lined up for 2012, and can't wait to introduce them to the public."
All of which rather begs the question: is there anyone left that hasn't already downloaded Angry Birds? It crossed the 500 million download mark in November, a month ahead of its second birthday, and last month chief marketing officer Peter Vesterbacka said Rovio was planning to float on the Hong Kong stock exchange in 2013, the first step on its path to become as big as Disney.
