Angry Birds downloaded a billion times

Games in the Angry Birds series have been downloaded more than a billion times, Finnish developer Rovio has announced.

The milestone, announced in a post on Rovio's website, has been reached in just 29 months, with half the total coming since last November, when the game crossed the 500 million download mark.

It's a remarkable achievement, of course, but it hasn't been as lucrative for Rovio as you might think. In the whole of 2011 Angry Birds was downloaded 648 million times, but Rovio made just €75 million (£60.5m) in revenue – and 30 per cent of that came from merchandising and licensing.
