Fishlabs CEO Michael Schade has revealed that the iPhone version of Rally Master Pro was hit by a 95 per cent piracy rate on its first day of availability.
The alarming piracy rate, along with complaints about the title’s price from consumers, has already led the developer to reduce the cost of the game.
“Alright, we heard you. We have dropped the price to £3.99/€5,49. We think RMP is a polished game and if you like rally racing it offers great value for €5,99, but we don't want to argue with our customers," he wrote on Touch Arcade (via Mobile Entertainment).
“However, it feels kind of strange to be facing a discussion of 50 Euro Cents about international price points on a game that we have spent 5,000 working hours on. In combination with 95 per cent piracy (!) on the first day this makes it very hard to believe in the future of the App Store, sometimes.”
Fishlabs is the second studio to express concerns about iPhone piracy rates in the past week. Developer Smells Like Donkey found that as many as 90 per cent of Tap Fu players tracked via online scoreboards were playing a pirated copy of the game during its first week of availability.
I didn't even know till recently that piracy was a big problem on iPhone. This really sucks, hopefully Sony and Palm will have more luck distributing their minis/apps respectively. I wonder how Apple can combat this though, Sonys latest attempt was unpopular, yet possibly effective in the long run. And I have no idea how the Palm Pre is looking, last time I checked there were 50 or so apps on their 'app catalogue'. And they'd only just given devs the ability to be able to charge for them.
Face it, a lot of people are thieves. There is no good business model in the iPhone. No one should support it until Apple sorts something out.
I dont think price has anything to do with it, if people wont pay 6 euros they wont pay 5 euros 50!
This surely has to be the main problem with digital distribution.
