Anti-Games Aussie Attorney General Stepping Down

Major roadblock to rating reform removed as Michael Atkinson takes back seat.

Michael Atkinson, South Australia’s Attorney General, will be stepping down from his position to take a back seat role in the Australian Parliament.

Atkinson represented the region’s major road block to ratings reform and wielded a veto power that stopped all attempts to allow for 18+ games to be sold in the country. He was the only Attorney General out of six in the country who opposed updating the law.

“I believe there should be renewal," Atkinson said. “I have had 20 years in Parliament.I think there are talented people on the Labor backbench who deserve a go.”

The politician will also step down from his position in Parliament at the end of his term in 2014, saying he wanted to spend more time with his son and attend his football matches.

Currently, censorship laws in Australia only allow for the sale of games which meet the criteria for an MA15+ rating or below, this has lead to a number of high-profiles titles being banned from sale.
