Apple has said that there are currently 21,178 “game and entertainment titles” available for download from the App Store.
At a San Francisco event last night the company revealed the massive gap in the number of games available for iPhone / iPod Touch and rival platforms DS and PSP. There are reportedly 3,680 games for Nintendo’s handheld and just 607 for Sony’s portable.
The App Store’s line-up of games has been bolstered by the addition of EA’s Madden NFL 10, reports Mac Life. Also due for release this year are Ubisoft’s Assassin's Creed II: Discovery, Gameloft's sci-fi FPS N.O.V.A. and Tapulous' music racer Riddim Ribbon.
Sony said earlier this week that it might consider releasing free PSP development kits in a bid to attract more developers to the platform. However, the company has previously stated that it’s focused on the quality of releases rather than the quantity, and has also suggested that an abundance of titles for a platform like iPhone can lead to visibility issues, leaving developers frustrated when their games are overlooked by consumers.
21,178, but just how many of those are "worth" buying. 99.99% of it is just shit/shovelware.
No doubt Apple fans will be sucking each others dicks over this!
Completely right. I hope the new PSP Go downloads manage to have some sort of quality control unlike Apple who happily let tosh like juggling breasts onto the market. Also there are no useful apps for the iPhone that you cannot get on any normal phone (note I said useful apps, before someone comes in and mentions yet another pointless one).
Useful apps? How about PI83. A fairly decent graphing calculator app.
pUniverse, point your iPhone at the sky at night and it will show you the stars that you your iPhone is facing and any constaltion that they may be in, among other things.
iWrecked, if you're ever in a car accident it gives you a place to put all the information that you're going to have to take down. You can take pictures of the damage and keep them in the app. It records your gps position so you have the street and what not. Sure each seperate function can be done on most other smart phones but the speed and convience is key. It came in handy when this guy hit my car.
RK_free is an app that records where you run on google maps and when you're done running it tells you how fast you ran at differnt points during your run. I run a lot so I use this all the time. It gives me feedback and helps me set goals.
I forget the name of the app, but being able to take a picture of a book cover and then read reviews about it.
I know Shazam, the free application that tells you the name of songs is now avaiable on other phones but Midomi is only on the iPhone and is much better than Shazam. (Midomi is a lot better than it used to be)
Those are just off the top of my head and as far as I know you can only do those things on an iPhone. There are lots of fun "pointless" apps that can make your voice sound like T-pain and what not. And even more apps that are only for iPhone that do something similer to apps on other phones but do it better. You have to face the fact that developers flock to the large instal base.
I also don't think that apple is overstating the games aspect of the device. I haven't touched my psp since I got my iPhone to be honest. But yes, there are a lot of crappy apps that I download and delete right away but that only happens when the app is free and has a low rating.
too late, Sony isn't going to have any approval process for the PSP Go, not that anyone actually expects the PSP Go to be successful anyway >_>
I love all of those iphone ads that go "need to split a bill? There's an app for that.", and so on.
They always leave me wondering whether the iphone is aimed strictly at people without GCSE maths or something.
