Apple looks set to unveil the much-rumoured iPhone 5 next week after inviting media to a "special event" called "Let's talk iPhone" at its Cupertino, California headquarters.
While an Apple spokesperson wouldn’t provide further details about the October 4 event when contacted by Reuters, it has been rumoured for months that the company will announce its latest iPhone in early October before rolling out the device later in the month.
The new model is expected to feature a bigger touchscreen than its predecessor, which launched in June 2010, plus a better antenna and an 8-megapixel camera, according to the news agency’s sources.
Taiwanese manufacturers Hon Hai Precision Industries and Pegatron have been told to gear up capacity for up to 45 million units, they added.
BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis believes Apple will launch another version of the iPhone 4 alongside the new model. "The new [iPhone] 4 will tackle the prepaid market and the [iPhone] 5 will have the A5 chip that's in the iPad and be faster, thinner and possibly with a bigger screen," he said.
