Apple: iPod Touch is the world's most popular gaming portable

On stage at yesterday's Let's Talk iPhone event held at its Cupertino headquarters, Tim Cook, new CEO of Apple, said that the iPod Touch had become the world's most popular portable gaming device.

"Not only is it the most popular music player in the world, but we're excited to announce it's now also the most popular portable game player in the world," he said.

While Cook provided no figures to back up his claim, the company would need to have sold around 150 million iPod Touches to overtake the lifetime sales of Nintendo's DS. By the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2010, Nintendo said DS had sold 128.9 million units, and a further 17.52 million units had been sold by March 31, 2011.

Well then, I guess we should all just buy Apple products from now on and not bother with other companies then...

In the same way as andriod is the best selling smartphone os. Technically true but at the same time, completely missing the point and misleading.

Same as announcing that windows is the most popular home gaming platform

the fact that a number of devices theoretically able to play games have been sold, and the fact that a number of games have been sold via the online store does not make a smartphone become a game console

i have one, but I'm not giving my DS away after Tim Cook's announcement

I was not aware the iPod was a gaming platform. In fact, I think it's about as much a gaming platform as the rubber case I have protecting my iPod.

He needs to learn what games are, not Apps which last about 10 seconds before becoming unwanted.

Let's keep it as an portable entertainment. Gaming deserves better.
