Electronic Arts has confirmed the development of a sequel to EA Montreal's 2008 co-op action game, Army of Two.
Army of Two: The 40th Day will again revolve around the co-op gameplay that was the focus of the first title. EA promises more co-op moves than the original.
Set in Shanghai, China, the story follows the private military duo of Salem and Rios, who are trying to get to the source behind "mysterious catastrophies" within the city.
The game is slated for release this winter on Xbox 360, PS3 and PSP.
EA said last year that Army of Two would be made into a movie via a deal with Universal Pictures. Production was slated to begin this year.
"As we develop new IPs we have been learning to think about the IP as more than a game, as a potential cross-media franchise," Pat O'Brien, VP of EA Entertainment told Edge in October.
"That infuses the creative team's thinking about story, characters and the world. This thinking was definitely part of the process while we developed [Army of Two]."
The original Army of Two generated $100 million in revenues, according to EA.
AoT was a decent game, fun while it lasted. I tried going back to it recently, however, and was appalled by the sludgy aiming/thumbstick controls.
I feel like a sucker for having paid for and played through Ao2. It didn't even have an ending! Just a cut scene for what should have been the final boss. Sooo many bad design choices and wannabe elements.
EA should look at how many copies are sitting on used game store shelves at $20 as a testament to how uninterested the public is in playing more.
I would have called it Army of Two 3... why? it makes no sense, just like the 40th day
Presumably, once you play the game it will make sense.
I'm very glad for this, because I very much enjoyed Army of Two. Sure it was riddled with poor design decisions, but there was so much they got right it didn't frustrate for long. As long as they switch Overkill and Feign Death from being on the same buttons then that alone will be worth it.
