Atari Q1 Revenue Down 65%

Relatively small number of game releases compared to the first quarter of 2009 blamed for year-over-year decline.

Atari has posted revenues of €19.3 million for its first fiscal quarter ended June 30, down 65 per cent year-over-year.

The decrease, which the firm said was “in line with expectations”, was mainly due to a smaller number of releases during the quarter compared to the previous year. Atari launched Sandlot Sluggers during the three month period, compared to Ghostbusters: The Video Game in the US and The Chronicles Of Riddick: Assault On Dark Athena in the same quarter last year.

The quarter's highlight was online sales, which grew 320 per cent to €8.4 million, accounting for 43.5 per cent of total revenues. Star Trek Online and Champions Online subscription revenues were cited as providing a boost in this area of the business.

The company said it expects a “significant portion” of its full-year revenue to be generated in the second half of the fiscal year when most of its new titles are launched. Products due for release by spring 2011 include Test Drive Unlimited 2, Haunted House, Backyard Sport: Rookie Rush, The Witcher 2 and a series of XBLA, PSN and PC downloadable games.

Atari also forecast a “considerable improvement in current operating income (loss) in each of the semesters in fiscal year 2010/2011 as compared to the equivalent periods in fiscal year 2009/2010”.
