Independent charity BAFTA has revealed a new Social Network Game category in its forthcoming awards, to be presented next year.
The new category has been introduced to identify and reward excellence and innovation in the area of social games.
Ray Maguire, chairman of BAFTA’s videogames committee, said: “The rise in popularity and sophistication of social media gaming has been meteoric. It is only right to recognise the hard work, fantastic creativity and great success being demonstrated in this new area of the industry.”
The BAFTA videogame awards are now in their third year. At the awards held earlier this year, Batman: Arkham Asylum walked away with the Best Game award.
The deadline for entries into the 2011 British Academy Video Games Awards is Monday 15 November, entry forms are available from the official BAFTA website.
The nominations will be announced on February 16, with the awards following on March 16 in London.
