EA has shown new PC footage of its upcoming Battlefield 3 as well as announcing a multiplayer beta to kick off in September.
The game, powered by the Frostbite 2 engine, looks revelatory, boasting huge theatres filled with plumes of thick smoke and shimmering particle effects. Audio keeps up its end of the bargain, too, with refreshingly believable dialogue and satisfying, clunking sound effects.
EA demoed a single-player tank section, as well as showing a brief trailer (below) of a multiplayer level based in paris called Operation Metro.
Battlelog, a free new social tool which allows players to launch the game, manage friends lists and form squads, was also revealed.
The multiformat, multiplayer open beta kicks off in September, while gamers can expect to see the final game on October 25.

7It would have been nice if DICE had shown those of us without HAL 9000 in our studies the console version. Here's hoping the 360/PS3 versions are demoed to the press.
Oh because there isn't enough PS3/360 coverage yeah? Leave us PC players to our coverage and stop complaining. Game looks great on PC in any case.
It's all good, by showcasing the PC they're clearly demonstrating what any PC gamer can upgrade to today and at the same time demonstrating to console owners what they can expect from the next generation of consoles in 2 - 3 years. Everybody wins.
I never disputed that and never complained about it. Just pointing out that whilst the PC version looks so incredible, it would have been nice if DICE had even mentioned a playable console version on the showfloor for press. Of course they're going to demo the PC version at their briefing! They'd be mad not too. Just don't go saying things like "us PC players." It makes you look very conceited and elitist.
Sod that. I want to see what it looks like on 360/PS3! I can't afford to upgrade my PC (again).
Me too. I already upgraded my PC twice. It would be nice to see Xbox360/PS3 versions too
You guys obviously do not know how to build a PC....3 years and still going strong here.
