Bayonetta 2 a Wii U exclusive

Bayonetta 2 has been announced for Wii U. The long-rumoured sequel to Platinum Games’ masterful action game is being published by Nintendo and will be exclusive to the new console.

The game was the biggest surprise from this afternoon’s Nintendo Direct broadcast, hosted by the company’s European president Satoru Shibata. It follows reports that Sega had cancelled production of the game earlier this year in response to its financial woes.

Produced by Atushi Inaba, Bayonetta 2 is not being helmed by Hideki Kamiya, the original game’s director. Instead that role will be taken by Yusuke Hashimoto, who’s got some pedigree: in addition to working on the original he has credits on Street Fighter IV, Resident Evil 4, Devil May Cry and God Hand.

Little was revealed aside from the briefest of teaser trailers; no release date was set. But, given Nintendo’s clear intent to position Wii U as suitable for core gamers, that was all that was required.

This is Platinum’s second Wii U game. P-100, the action game announced at E3, has a new name: The Wonderful 101.

We’ll update with more images and video as they come in. Shibata also confirmed that Wii U will be on European shelves on November 30, though no price was revealed; as with 3DS, that will be set by retailers.
