Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski has admitted to being shocked by the acquisition of id Software by Bethesda parent ZeniMax.
In an interview with Develop, the Gears Of War designer compares the move to 3D Realms’ recent abandonment of Duke Nukem Forever. “To see the old standbys go through these kinds of changes...it’s really shocking,” he says. “We all came from the same mould from the shareware days; these studios have been around forever, and to see them acquired like that is a surprise.”
He does, however, predict positive results for id in the long term. “It will add stability, it will help them leverage their properties more; but in the meantime it’s so surreal. As they say, the one constant is change.”
Asked whether Epic itself might succumb to such a bid, he implies that if it did happen, it wouldn’t be for financial reasons. “We’re doing fine as is right now. The Unreal Engine is extremely prolific, Gears is a success and I’ve got like five projects going on right now, all a guarantee that we’ll keep the lights on for years to come.”
Well, much as the Gears games undoubtedly appeal to 13-year-old boys (who really shouldn't be playing them), there are plently of more adult gamers who find a lot to enjoy in the videogaming equivelant of Die Hard.
Yes, they might be guilty pleasures to some degree, but there isn't much out there that offers even half the fine-tuned fun of GoW2.
toadwarrior is right. 'Epic' are anything but what their name is. These morons can't even get the basics of games right and no amount of updates sort shit like the Gears of War games out. Those games are pure garbage and like toad says, the stupid little kids go mad for this junk
Wow, are you wrong! Gears is one of the best shooters since Doom, the only bad thing you can say about it is that it's a testosterone fueled gun fest, but given that even my girlfriend loves it i guess that's no bad thing.
Drunken Fist / Pissed Moron , Tell me if you think Gears is pure garbage / junk just what do you class as a good shooter ?
They introduced a fluid cover system that many game developers I'm sure will imitate and expound upon.
Actually they didn't introduce it. Other games (Kill.Switch) implemented it before them although they have done a very good job with it. Still it's a game not without its flaws.
They already have; see Dark Sector and 50 Cent. Same engine, same system.
Out of those companies the reason why Epic is still around is because they're willing to give up on innovating and shovel the same exact rubbish to 13 year old boys.
Once parents wise up and quit buying their kids adult games or their tastes change then Epic will be screwed.
Not a fan of Unreal Tournament?
You tell them Dude Huge!
