Braben: "Big publishers are running scared"

In an interview, the Elite creator says that the decision to put on hold the development of The Outsider was in large part due to an increasingly risk-averse publishing community. "There's a problem at the moment as big publishers are running scared," he tells us. "What really upsets me is that we have this Call Of Duty-shaped jelly mould, and it's being used to create games that are all competing for a very narrow niche. That's very disappointing as a gamer…something inside me dies when I see another game that looks exactly the same as all the others." For the full interview, follow the source link below.

I don't think any of us would argue that there are too many CoD-like titles out there. As far as niches go, however, you would have to argue that the military shooter is rather broad, given the sales successes of CoD, Battlefield, even imitations like Homefront. I'm not asking for more, I'm just saying that the 25m sales of BlOps is hardly a 'narrow niche'...
Hopefully publishers will realise that CoD/Battlefied own this field, and that their best way forward is to create new genres or develop and find exciting twists on the less popular ones out there.

Definitely, Evild Edd, it's not a narrow niche. But it's still just one area of gaming, and it's still taking most investment and attention from the publishers.
I can understand publishers that see The Outsider as as massively risky and expensive because I'm sure it is, but if they put all their investment in one genre and fail to develop new ones with games like The Outsider they're not looking after their own futures.

In an interview, the Elite creator says.....

Er, he was the co-creator of Elite. Or did Ian Bell never exist?

something inside me dies when I see another game that looks exactly the same as all the others.

Something inside me dies when I see Kinect games aimed at little girls, such as Kinectemals or Kinect Disneyland.

Um, why? And anyway, my son likes Kinectimals - I think he'll like Disneyland Adventures too.
