Pirates Of The Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer has signed two major names to Jerry Bruckheimer Game Studio.
Jay Cohen, ex-senior vice president of publishing at Ubisoft's north American subsidiary, and Jim Veevaert, executive publisher of Halo 3 and the man that brought Epic Games - and Gears Of War - to Microsoft Game Studios, will act as president of development and president of production respectively.
In an Edge interview that you can read here, the two new members of the team explain that the game studio will aim to develop new IPs that will work across videogames, television and film. They will be using external development teams, and are working to release their first products in three to five years.

"It’s not about, after the fact, thinking, 'Oh, that would have been a great idea, let’s make a phone call and call Hollywood and get a film made of this game!” It’s totally not that," Cohen tells us. "When you come to market, imagine utilising all the interactive platforms available today, and delivering story before, during, and after the release of other portions. We need to be at the intersection of creativity across the medium, and the strength of Bruckheimer’s production studios can actually deliver that.
Veevaert, who also developed the Viva Piñata animated TV series, is bullish in the face of the risk at establishing a game development studio in a shrinking economy, claiming, "Whenever times get challenging like this, now’s the time when you make the investment, now’s the time when you work to find the right teams, the right projects, and the right infrastructure so that we’re ready."
In a press release, Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music & Logo Group, makes strong claims to the relationship between his organisation and Jerry Bruckheimer Game Studio: "Following on the success of Harmonix and Rock Band, this powerhouse coupling of Bruckheimer and MTV Games is the next step in our evolution in the video game industry."
In an interview in today's LA Times, Bruckheimer said, "There's storytelling and there's character development in games. We're in the entertainment business. We entertain you in theaters, on TV and on your game platforms."
