Don Mattrick, senior VP of the Xbox business, has told MTV that Bungie is working on a new Halo game for Microsoft, the developer’s former parent company.

When asked about the lack of Halo content at Microsoft’s E3 press conference on Monday, Mattrick said that Halo announcements are in the works, revealing that, aside from Ensemble Studios’ RTS game Halo Wars and Peter Jackson’s Halo project, original series developer Bungie is working on a new Halo title.

Mattrick’s comments came as Bungie’s president revealed that plans to unveil the developer’s new title during E3 week were cancelled by the game’s publisher, thought to be Microsoft.

"For the last several months, we've been building toward a reveal of something exciting that Bungie is working on," wrote Harold Ryan in an open letter on the developer’s website.

"We were looking forward to sharing that with our fan community during the week of E3. However, those plans were just changed by our publisher.

"We realize that many of our fans are disappointed by this turn of events; members of the Bungie team share that disappointment," he added.

"When the right time comes we look forward to sharing this exciting announcement with you. Until then, we appreciate your continued support and patience."

i have to echo grognard66's sentiments.

after reading that 'apology' to the fans, which anyone with half a brain can read between the lines as interpreting that as 'blame our %*^&ing, douchebag publishers', it's hard to deny at this point there isn't some sort of friction going on between both.

what really caught me by surprise was just how public and candid the letter was. i mean, you can almost feel the restrained disdain dripping from his every word. it makes you wonder how the rest of the team feels and how this will affect the project they're working on.

Isn't Halo kind of done? It was a great game, groundbreaking even, but there are now much better FPS's out there. COD, Resistance, and Gears have all taken over. I'm sure a new one would be big, but its not the experience it was a few years ago.

Wow, it really sounds like there has been a major falling out between Bungie and MS. I get the impression that the corporate cultures of these two entities combines as well as oil and water. Didn't Bungie bother talking to MS before putting up the teaser site to coordinate the announcements (considering the fact that they know MS legally has the first option to publish their upcoming games?)?

Agreed, remember reading the Bungie management team alluding to the MS stranglehold on their creative decisions. However, you can't complain too much giving the success of the overall Halo games, without Microsoft's marketing craziness I highly doubt the Halo series would be were it is today. Pretty much anything they create will be gold from now on, as long as they don't technically create a poor game. Hopefully Bungie and Microsoft stay close given the quality that Bungie provides.
