Activision’s Call Of Duty: World At War has sold over 11 million copies.

The game released in November 2008, and subsequent downloadable content has also performed strongly, with the title’s first map pack shifting over two million copies.

“These outstanding feats would have never been possible without the continued dedication and support from all of the loyal Call Of Duty fans. For that, we at Treyarch and Activision would like to extend our sincerest thank you,” the companies said in a statement.

Activision’s decision to rotate annual series development duties between franchise creator Infinity Ward and Treyarch has received some criticism from fans of the former studio, but World At War’s commercial success appears to support the publisher’s strategy - strong annual sales are maintained while each studio has longer development time between releases.

Earlier this week Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey said he expects November 2009 release Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward’s direct sequel to 2007’s Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare, to sell 11.1 million units this calendar year.
