Hideo Kojima is famous for not only his Metal Gear Solid series, but also for saying after nearly each installment that he won't be making another.

Of course, he always ends up coming back to the hit franchise.

Again, after MGS4, he said he would be moving on to new projects, but he tells 1Up, "I have three concepts for MGS5 already.

"What would be ideal for me with MGS5, though, is that we don't [use] those [concepts]. If the team picks one of those concepts, I have to get involved again, which I don't want to do."

Kojima said in 2007 that MGS4 would be the last time he was directly involved with the development of an MGS game, opting to step back and act in a more hands-off role.

He's confident that Kojima Productions staff will come up with impressive MGS5 concepts.

"There are already so many good ideas from the staff, so if we select one of those, that would be really good. At that point I could really rely on them and take the step back to be the producer, which is the ideal situation, I think," Kojima stated.

But at the same time, Kojima expressed how one of his "mistakes" in the development of MGS4 was sharing too much responsibility to team members.

"I thought that leaving things up to the team members and giving them more responsibility was the only way for them to grow, sometimes that sort of sacrifice can be too much, and in this case it was.

"Nothing good came of giving them more responsibility. I'm not saying the staff were slackers--definitely not -- they were working really hard. But it was about the decisions they made."

Disappointing.

That is the word used to describe Metal Gear Solid 4 at Konami and Sony.

In just one months time, Metal Gear Solid 4 had dropped all the way down to #34 in terms of monthly sales. That is NOT GOOD.

Metal Gear Solid 4 only helped improve console sales for one month. After that, it was back down to usual.

Now, nobody at all ever mentions Metal Gear Solid 4, because the game has disappointing online play, and virtually no replay value.

The only reason the game scored so highly by all the early reviews was because of the contract that Konami forced the reviewers to sign in order to receive an early review copy of the game. The contract forced reviewers into a position where they were not allowed to let the annoying factors of loooooong loading "installs" and annoying 90 minute movie sequences be counted against the game.

The reviewers who waited for the game to be released before reviewing it may not have gotten an early copy from Konami, but they rated the game in a much better way that talked about the framerate dipping below 30 frames per second, the low resolution textures, the long load times and how annoying the "installs" were throughout the entire game, the boring storyline, lack of features, the poor online play, the lack of replay value, ect......

Actual gamers don't have to sign contracts, though. That's why Metal Gear Solid 4 had only 10 seconds of fame, and then was forgotten about.

Could you please troll harder? I mean just work for your money damnit, because this last comment was lazy. Seriously Kim. Maybe you could use a bit more capslock or something.

Ugh. You need to stop posting comments. All I see from you is 360 fanboyism and ignorant posts about why PS3 sucks and 360 is the best. I've never ever read anything about MGS4 having bad textures. Everywhere I've read says that it's one of the best looking console games ever made. And here you are, crapping all over it. I'm willing to bet you haven't even played the game.

People aren't talking about MGS4 months later because there's not much to say. The same can be said about Bioshock. The same will be said of Fallout 3. Single player focused games don't get much attention after a few months. You could say the same about GTAIV (one of the biggest releases of the year). You could also say the same about CoD4 Single Player and even Halo 3. And guess what, none of them will outsell Pokemon Diamond/Pearl, but you don't really see people talking about that either.

Please stop posting until you learn to stop spouting fanboyism every time you post.

But, let me guess, if it was released for the 360 as well, it would have sold MANY more copies and added to the 360s already amazing library of games? Fact, right?

incompetent story, incohearent dialogue, over-indulgent cutscenes; i don't see how the series could possibly get any worse if they decided to move in another direction. it worked wonders for Capcom with Resident Evil 4.

MGS4, despite impressive sales, wasn't the system seller Sony was hoping for. i've never read or seen so many high-score reviews for a game where the tone was overwhelmingly apologetic and/or defensive, as though they were trying to convince themselves more than anything. it came and went with little fanfare, yet a title like Bioshock which looks pathetic by sales comparison still has people talking more than a year later. now that's not a comparison of quality between the two, i'm merely pointing out how one title is viewed based on it's own merits (gameplay, story, controls, etc) whereas the other has become increasingly more reflective of it's director instead of the game itself.

but who can blame him for staying, really? MGS has given him rock-star status on both sides of the pacific, game journo's hang on his every word, his job is secure and he gets to call the shots. the only reason he'd have for wanting to give that up and move on is the tremendous amount of pressure and stress that comes with it.

P.S: Hey Chris, are we ever getting another GameTheory podcast? Just occured to me that it's been like a month since the last one and (after a brief run-through) people are going ape shit on the website, lol. any info would be great.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "not the system seller Sony was hoping for" but it definitely sold a lot of consoles, especially if you compare it to GTAIV, which didn't bump up the sales of either console much at all.

Everything else you say is pretty much just your opinion. In fact your comment about Bioshock is a bit ignorant. It's shipped 2.2 million units since launch. Considering it's not a huge franchise like MGS and that it's not even released in all three regions (whereas MGS is), it's a pretty big commercial success (only one million less than MGS4).

It's your opinion and as that it's respectable.
However, when someone says these kinda things about anything you can't help but feel that the person simply don't have a clue about the case. Believe me when you play the series you'll see that (hype and director aside) it has its own merits.
Speaking of sales comparisons, MGS4 sold 3,2M copies in 3 months (and counting) -- quite a fanfare if you ask me for a pretentious title.

This is the same con-game that goes on after the release of every Metal Gear Solid game. (ie, "Oh, I wasn't going to do anymore of them, but they're going to do it anyway and I don't want them to do it without me," as if he didn't already know that.) Going through the motions of this little ruse after the release of every Metal Gear game is necessary in order to justify all of the lying that went on BEFORE the release of every Metal Gear game that this one is really, truly, honestly, really going to be the last one ever.

I wonder if without Kojima, the game will have that "typical" Metal Gear feel and balance. For me, these games have always been unique experiences with lots of good memories. A bit different from the Splinter Cell games - which are also great but tend to lean more toward being all-serious all the time.

You're right. It was always the quirky and inventive and downright hilarious bits that made MGS a great series.
I think Kojima could do with a vacation.............
If I was in his shoes I'd sneak out of Konami HQ in a cardboard box.......!
