Antoine Seux of Capcom France has said that early Wii sales of Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles are below what was expected from the latest title in the series.
Speaking to European website GameKult (via Nintendo Everything’s Google translation) Seux explained that figures “are below what we hoped,” adding, “ After three weeks we are a total of 16,000 units sold. One feels that there is a problem very clear on this style of game on the Wii, where gamers have obviously moved on.”
Touching upon the success Capcom saw with its release of Resident Evil 4 on Wii, Seux continued, “Resident Evil 4 on Wii had worked well, but it was released in June 2007, when the market had nothing to do! This year the Wii was very difficult with an oversupply, and a gamer market that has radically changed.”
Sega studio director Constantine Hantzopoulos recently discussed the poor performance of the company’s Mature rated Wii games and said that Sega is now less likely to release titles similar to MadWorld and House Of The Dead: Overkill on the platform.
Wow. Let's release ANOTHER light gun game and expect all the 'dumb' Wii owners to pick it up and when they don't, we'll moan that mature games don't sell on the Wii. Its funny how this guy and other devs can't see dressing up tripe (looking mainly at Sega) or passing off a light gun game with a big franchise on it doesn't mean people will lap it up. They think Wii owners will buy any old shit and while they have bought crap, they're hardly at the levels of sales of the good games out there.
I don't know what this guy is talking about anyway. Monster Hunter Tri has sold more than the PS2 versions, as did Okami and Resident Evil 4 also did well (though just short of the PS2 version). Why, cos they're all good games maybe? And the PS2 has a bigger userbase than the Wii.
Devs don't put in the time and effort and then moan that people don't buy their games. While light gun games aren't shovelware, I certainly wouldn't pay £10 for one, so why would I pay 3-4 more? As for stuff like Madworld and The Conduit, well, the former is plain average and can be classed as niche and the latter is just plain crap. So them not selling much cannot come to as shock for the devs. RE 4 sold better on the Gamecube than RE 5 on the 360, so what does that say?
These games wouldn't sell more on the 360 and PS3. Talking demographics doesn't always mean its going to be different. Chinatown Wars is a perfect example. The only 3rd party games that sell in really big numbers on those consoles are the polished turds that are the GTA and CoD games. Go look at the top ten games for these consoles (particularly the 360) and you'll see other than M$ and Sony published games, its those two franchises that have managed to sell the best numbers. Owners for those systems are the ones that will buy any old shit, but I guess, but again, people buy first party games more than anything else so there's no point in saying the old "people buy Nintendo consoles for their own games" . The fact that the RE and GTA series have sold much less than previous generations must be one of the real problems devs should be looking at here (and this comes down to the main point of releasing any old crap)
Capcom expects to sell 800k units of this game. I think that's a bit generous, but I'm know it'll get to about 500k for sure. This dude is talking about French sales. This dude isn't Capcom of Japan or anything so what he says doesn't represent the company as a whole.
But yeah, give the light-gun games a rest guys. Another TPS like RE4 was the way to go after RE4 and Umbrella Chronicles.
Actually, Darkside Chronicles is a very high quality light shooter game - like Dead Space: Extraction before it. Yes, they are both light gun games, but at least Darkside Chronicles has the powerful Resident Evil francise base attached to it. Calling it a rehash is a disservice and conveniently ignores that RE4 was even more of a rehash (literally a port with no new content, just waggle) and did well at that time.
I don't understand the apologist attitudes. Nintendo consoles have always been vehicles to move Nintento software - period. Both MS and Sony have emphasized third-parties more in their business strategies and third-parties have had more success on those platforms as a result.
With a few notable exceptions, Nintendo consumers will continue to buy Nintendo games overwhelmingly. Despite it's impressive install base, it's not a console that people play regularly or purchase a lot of third-party software for. There's nothing wrong with that and it has worked exceedingly well for Nintendo, but third-party publishers and fans of the system need to accept that reality.
Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles is recycled RE stories in yet another light gun game.
How many of these do Capcom think people are going to buy? Mature themes do not make up for a lack of quality or make people forget that lightgun games are a dime a dozen on the Wii.
I think we are at a stage now where those who were waiting and demanding mature games for the Wii have moved on, either trading their Wii for a 360/PS3 or simply just buying a 360/PS3.
Consoles are much cheaper now, many people can afford to have more than one, so that initial market of Wii owners wanting mature titles has been diluted if not nearly disappeared.
The industry was simply too slow to re-act to this.
Oh and if you feel like making some long term cash via eBay, pick this up if you see it. With those kind of sales its going to be a rare gem in a few years time and any Resi game is collectable.
Why are console 'light gun' games that are spin offs being used as the basis for deciding the whole strategy over Wii support?
The whole debate, by the industry, press and gamers alike could do without about the whole divisive argument and the rise of the buzzwords hardcore, casual and mature.
Just received a Wii for christmas, a little disheartening to see third parties have already decided before I can make a choice with my money as to the kind of games I am interested in on the platform.
The reasons for this failure are so simple and obvious. The problem is not whether it is a mature game or not but quite frankly quality. I quite frankly belive that any mature title that had the same level of polish on the Wii as on either PS3 or XBOX 360 would sell. But all those cited titles are simply not there, they are stupid cash-ins living on some brand. But if you build Resi Evil 6 all up for Wii, you can be sure it would sell millions, see what happened to Monster Hunter 3 or Dragon Quest 9 in Japan.
The key phrase is "in Japan". The unique control system on the Wii automatically eliminates it from serious consideration for the type of games that sell well in Western territories, where Wii has been reduced to the mini-game and light-shooter genres - both of which are niche markets. Also, the Japanese have an institutional preference for Japanese consoles and games which doesn't exist in the rest of the world.
And they're surprised by this?
