Capcom defends on-disc DLC

Capcom has defended the storage of planned DLC on Street Fighter X Tekken discs to the Better Business Bureau, arguing that there is "no distinction" between content stored on a disc or offered as a download.

Last month, hackers were quick to find and unlock 12 new characters, as well as character costumes, colours and stat-modifying gems on the game's disc, with Street Fighter X Tekken producer Yoshinori Ono admitting they would be unlocked through a paid DLC update later this year.

Since then, several players have reported Capcom to US consumer body the Better Business Bureau, and Cinema Blend reports that those that complained have now received the company's official response.

"At Capcom, we value our customers and make every effort to resolve customer complaints," the statement reads. "We are sorry to hear that [player name] was so disappointed  with the Street Fighter X Tekken game and would like to respond to his complaints.

"SFXT has an enormous amount of content, fully developed and available for play and enjoyment immediately on-disc. Given the 38 characters available for full play, as well as multiple play modes, SFXT provides great value for all players from day one.

"While Capcom is sorry that some of its fans are not happy about the chosen method of delivery for the DLC, we believe that this method will provide more flexible and efficient gameplay throughout the game's lifecycle.

"There is effectively no distinction between the DLC being 'locked' behind the disc and available for unlocking at a later date, or being available through a full download at a later date, other than delivery mechanism."

The reponse sticks to Ono's line from last month; that storing all DLC data on the disc means that players who choose not to pay for new characters, costumes, colours or gems will be able to play against those that do pay up without a hefty, mandatory download or buy a Super version of the game on a disc.

That makes sense, but what has Capcom's community up in arms isn't so much the storage or delivery mechanism, but the timing. While costumes, colours and gems look set to form a steady flow of DLC over the coming months, the characters won't be available until after the release of the PS Vita version of the game, due this autumn.

That means a six-month wait for characters which, YouTube footage has shown, are in a reasonably complete state; players have essentially bought the Super revision of the game, but won't be able to play it until later this year. Even then, they'll have to pay.

Players are further enraged by Street Fighter X Tekken having shipped with several bugs, including an issue preventing sound effects from playing during online matches, as well as a number of infinite combos and glitches that, they argue, should have been spotted by QA.
