Japanese publisher Capcom has reported impressive financial results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2009.

Net sales increased 10.6 percent to 91,878 million yen ($924 million/£615 million), while net income rose 3.3 percent to 8,063 million yen ($81.1 million/£53.4 million).

The company’s videogame unit generated two thirds of total sales, with Resident Evil 5 shipping four million units during the fourth quarter and Street Fighter IV two million.

Capcom said the Japanese videogame market “slowed down due to drastic market expansion during the previous fiscal year and the saturation of new-generation game consoles in households,” but noted that “the overseas markets, namely the US and Europe, continued expanding even under the global recession.”

For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010, Capcom forecast net sales of 95,000 million yen ($955.5 million/£636.65 million) and operating income of 15,500 million yen ($155.9 million/£103.7 million), largely driven by the “steady growth” of its games business.
