Capcom has shipped over four million copies of Resident Evil 5 worldwide, the publisher has announced.

The news comes as the fifth instalment of the main Resident Evil series has sold over 400,000 copies across Japan in its debut week.

“Thanks to the company’s proprietary engine, the MT Framework, Capcom was able to make Resident Evil 5 a multi-platform title, giving a vast number of players the opportunity to enjoy the game,” Capcom said in a statement.

For now, that four million figure represents units shipped, not sold. Capcom recently announced that the demo of Resident Evil 5 had been downloaded 4 million times.

The entire Resident Evil Franchise has shipped over 40 million copies worldwide since the first title was released in 1996, Capcom added.

Not a surprise to see sales so high. Resident Evil 5 has by far the best graphics of any game released in 2009, and it includes the co-op feature that is now a "standard" feature in order for a game to be considered above average. The great thing about Resident Evil 5 is that it really is a must-buy game with lots of replay value.

Nice, then maybe after RE5's sales tapered down, they can release the rumored RE4 Classic Edition for PS3 and 360.
