id Software’s John Carmack didn’t have anything good to tell Quake fans at the QuakeCon 2008 keynote. According to a report on GameSpot, he confirmed that there are no Quake sequels currently being made.
Instead, Carmack used the keynote to focus on Rage, the id project that is closest to release. A new trailer for the game was shown and some of the open-world gameplay was detailed. Carmack had some choice words for each of the consoles Rage is developing on, saying that the Xbox 360’s DVD format was so constraining that Rage could not fit on even two discs without sacrificing fidelity. Unfortunately, putting the game on three discs would cause the publisher to incur both a massive additional manufacturing cost and another disc fee from Microsoft. While the PS3’s Blu-Ray technology does not have this space issue, Carmack did mention that for developers, the Xbox 360 is superior to Sony’s platform.
Carmack also brought up Doom 4, which was previously announced by id in April. It was mentioned that the game would only run in 30FPS compared to Rage’s 60, but that it will have “three times as much horsepower as Rage,” and bring gaming graphics to a place “no one has ever seen before.” No release date for Doom 4 was given.
Also discussed at the keynote was ids ventures into mobile gaming. Regarding the iPhone, Carmack said the unit was “more powerful than the DS and PSP combined.”
