"It's not just about being an interface to the western world. It's also about figuring out how to exploit the Asian markets”
At the Games Convention Asia, CDV's chief operating officer Arne Peters spoke to an audience of developers about the fine art of pitching game concepts and the possibility of the company opening an office in Asia.
"We are seriously considering opening up an office in Asia to accommodate requests from here," he said during the course of the talk.
Afterwards, we spoke exclusively with Peters. "Because we're a publicly traded company, we have to be a little careful about this, he said. “We are actually in a pretty advanced stage of adding a local existing team to our company.
"It's just the only way to handle the Asian region…it's so different from Europe, so different from the US. We need the local contacts, we need the local people. So it's a serious thing."
He admitted that one office just isn't enough to handle all of Asia. "It's a huge difference between Japan and China." Peters said that it's true that CDV has primarily boxed-products in the US and Europe. "But when moving into Asia, you certainly have to think about the local business as well.
"It's not just about being an interface to the western world," he added. "It's also about figuring out how to exploit the Asian markets. And you've got to start somewhere. Singapore is a very good hub. And they do a lot – they support this conference here."
We then asked Peters to estimate when everything would be ready for an announcement. "It should be ready by the end of this year, beginning of next year."
