CES: Xbox 360 sells 66 million, Kinect 18 million

Microsoft has sold more than 66 million Xbox 360s, and over 18 million units of the Kinect motion sensor.

The figures were revealed by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer during his keynote at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last night. He also revealed that Xbox Live has more than 40 million users, but neglected to specify how many were paying Gold members.

This time last year Ballmer put Xbox 360 sales at 50 million units, and Kinect at eight million, with more than 30 million users on Xbox Live. At the end of September, global lifetime sales of Xbox 360 stood at 57.6 million, meaning 8.4 million systems were sold in the last three months.

VentureBeat reports that Ballmer expressed pride in Microsoft's performance in videogames over the past decade, saying it was an example of the company at its best. "Did I expect this to happen ten years ago?" he asked. "I bet on this ten years ago."

Microsoft also announced new entertainment partners to produce video content for Xbox 360, including Fox News and IGN.
