Child's Play Announce Record Donations

Gaming Charity raises nearly $2.3m; iPhone game Canabalt goes open-source as a thank-you.

US gaming charity Child’s Play set a new annual record for donations in 2010, raising $2,294,317 in donations of toys, games, movies and books for sick children.

It takes the total raised by the charity since its inception in 2003 to just under $9 million.

While the charity relies on individual donations, it benefited from last year from several campaigns. The Humble Indie Bundle brought in $300,000, the Desert Bus For Hope gaming marathon raised $207,000, and the Gears of War 3 Fate Of Carmine campaign brought in $150,000.

The organisers of indiesale, a promotion which saw iPhone games Spider, Osmos, Canabalt, Drop 7, Eliss and Solipskier heavily discounted, raised $25,000 in seven days. By way of thanks Canabalt developers Semi Secret have released the source code for the frantic one-button platformer.

Child’s Play’s Foundation Coordinator Kristin Lindsay said: “Just because we’ve surpassed our goal this year doesn’t mean we’re going to slow down.

“In fact we are planning to expand so we can help even more children next year.”
