The rampant growth of Zynga’s city-building game CityVille has reached its logical conclusion: it is now the most popular Facebook app of all time.
In just a month since its release CityVille has amassed 88.4 million monthly active users, passing the previous record set by Zynga’s own FarmVille, which hit 83.7 million last March.
The game’s rapid rise to the top of the Facebook gaming charts has been attributed to it being Zynga’s first simultaneous worldwide launch, with the firm also using its existing games to raise awareness ahead of CityVille’s release.
CityVille’s success has served to further strengthen Zynga’s grip on Facebook gaming. It currently has almost 289 million monthly active users across the 54 apps it has available on the social networking site, with its nearest competitor, Takeoff Monkey, boasting a mere 53.8 million.
As we reported last month, Zynga is looking to expand into other markets, with the release of its first HTML5 game bringing the iPhone, iPad, Android and Blackberry platforms within its reach.
