Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Grand Theft Auto 4 have become two dominant names in this year’s BAFTA Videogames Awards nominations lists, with both going head-to-head in six separate categories.
Infinity Ward’s acclaimed Call of Duty title – which has already won accolades at the Spike Video Game Awards and the AIAS Interactive Achievement Awards – has received eight BAFTA nominations across fifteen categories.
The game, released back in November 2007, has picked up nominations for Action & Adventure, Artistic Achievement, Gameplay, Multiplayer, Use of Audio, Story and Character, Best Game, as well as the publicly-voted GAME Award.
Yet Grand Theft Auto 4, released six months after COD4, has been nominated in six of the same categories.
Rockstar North’s title has been nominated for seven awards in total; Best Game and the GAME Award, as well as in the category of Action & Adventure, Gameplay, Use of Audio, Story & Character, and Technical Achievement.
Meanwhile, LittleBigPlanet, Fable II, Fallout 3 and EA’s Dead Space each enjoy high presence across the categories.
Media Molecule’s PS3 exclusive is up for awards in Artistic Achievement, Casual, Original Score, Technical Achievement, and Use of Audio. Despite being nominated for the publicly-voted GAME Award, the title is not up for BAFTA’s own Best Game.
Conversely, Lionhead’s Fable 2 has been nominated for Best Game, but not for the GAME Award. The Xbox 360 exclusive finds itself nominated in the Action & Adventure, Original Score, Story and Character, and Technical Achievement brackets.
Fallout 3 takes five nominations, from Best Game to Original Score, Story & Character, Technical Achievement and the GAME Award. Dead Space too enjoyed high presence, taking nominations for four separate awards; Artistic Achievement, Action and Adventure, Original Score and Use of Audio.
There are a total of fifteen award categories, where all but the GAME Award and the One to Watch prize will be decided by an individual panel of judges. The event will also see Nolan Bushnell pick up a BAFTA Fellowship.
The British Academy Video Games Awards will take place on Tuesday 10 March at the London Hilton, Park Lane.
