Consoles Hit 22m in U.K.

The U.K. console installed base in 2008 jumped over 9 million units compared to 2007, according to research firm Chart-Track.

Citing data from Chart-Track, as of January 3, 2009, U.K. specialty retailer GAME said the installed current-gen console base (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS, PSP) in the U.K. and Ireland was 22 million units. On January 5, 2008, the installed base was just 12.7 million.

For reference, the total population of the U.K., according to CIA estimates, is 61 million.

By category, the total amount of home consoles (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii) more than doubled to 10 million units in 2008, up from 4.7 million a year prior.

Handhelds rose to 12 million from 8 million.
