Crytek: PS Vita “will have a hard time, might be too late”

Sony’s PlayStation Vita will struggle against next-generation mobiles and tablets, according to Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli. "The Vita is an absolutely fantastic platform but it will have a hard time, and it might be too late," he told the latest issue of Develop (via CVG). "I love Sony as a company, and we have great relations with them, but the Vita is going to have a hard time against the next generation mobiles and all the tablets. There's also the 3DS investing in this market," he added. "It's going to be a battle, and it will be about content and the platform's ability to receive the content. Streamlined social connectivity will also be very important."

Vita hardware currently represents the most advanced gaming handheld technology. The 3DS is a mix of new capabilities and out-of-date hardware. AAA games have been lacking since its launch, but Nintendo still has time to recover. Tablets and smart phones still have a long way to go in terms of AAA gaming content and tactile feedback controls.
Sony has an opportunity to set the bar on what we expect of a portable gaming platform. I think it will take a healthy mix of momentary games, hardcore games, and media compatibility--in addition to achieving synchronicity in content access and social interaction.

I just don't know. The visuals it pumps out look amazing, like the PSP's did before it was released. I remember seeing Wipeout Pure for the first time on an imported Japanese model in a shop on the Tottenham Court Road. I nearly dropped £400 for it right there and then. I think I will feel the same way when I see a Vita for the first time. But these days iPhone and Tegra smartphones really aren't that far off. The Vita won't stand out as having the best portable graphics for years in the same way that the PSP did. And anyway that still didn't save the PSP from failing to rule the handheld world.

I dont give a monkeys what anyone says. A healthy catalogue of games, competitive price and clear and appealing advertising will ensure the success of any console. But all three of those conditions need to be met or it will never become a big seller in my opinion.

And why does he love sony as a company? They are a bunch of arrogant arses. I love their tech, hell i own enough of it, but i don't like them, no way.

If it comes out with only watered down ports and rehashes of ps3 games (and it will) then it will fail.
At least you can trust in Nintendo to make AAA software to support their platform although the 3ds is starving at the moment I think it will come good.
As for smartphones and the prevailing theory that they are going to take over the living room and the mobile gaming market, I totally disagree on both counts. Dedicated hardware for the home will always have massive advantages in terms of power, cooling and price while dedicated mobile gaming platforms have proper controls and ..... good games.
