Dead Island UK number one

Four games make their debut in the top ten this week as Techland's open world shooter takes the top spot.

Dead Island has shambled its way to the top of this week's UK all formats chart, debuting at number one and knocking Deus Ex: Human Revolution from the spot in the process. Eidos Montreal's futuristic thriller falls to number five.

Three other games made their debut in the top ten this week: THQ's Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine occupies number two while Sony's PS3-exclusive Resistance 3 fights its way to fourth. Nintendo's Star Fox 64 3D sold enough copies to place it at number nine.

Just below that is Gran Turismo 5, which finds its fortunes reinvigorated by a recent Platinum release. Driver: San Francisco, meanwhile, slips one place to third.

Zumba Fitness continues to run out of puff, sliding down to sixth place, while Sega's Rise Of Nightmares debuts at 37th. Click the links below to read our reviews.

Yeah and FU too, Edge.

Congrats to Techland, the game is cracking good fun and easily deserving of its success.

You're taking this very personally, aren't you?

Aye, by all means get miffed if it is your game being criticised. Otherwise, why should you care? Also, the "shambling" comment was most likely because it is a zombie game. I doubt they were saying it to poke fun at its flaws even though it still came top. Still, you have to misinterpret quite a bit in order to see it as a criticism. I take it their review annoyed you?

That top 10 sums up the garbage we gamers are stuck with these days. And how a broken game like DI reaches number 1 I will never understand.

fatherofthenoo's picture

Actually let me rephrase that. They aren't all garbage. But most are generic, or old, or re-releases. It just doesn't make me go "wow". But that's just me of course.

Bit surprised Dead Island got to number one. It's being slated in a lot of places; not just Edge.Maybe the general game-buying public just like zombies to the point of unthinkingly consuming anything containing them. (It works for zombie films after all!)

While reading your comment, a light bulb just came on inside my head: All of those commenters upset that EDGE rated DI a 3/10 aren't teenagers; they're ZOMBIES!

CaptainQuint's picture

And I bet none of you Edge groupies have actually bothered to play it. Lord no, to even contemplate such a thing induces sneering guffaws and hoots from the back row. Daft sods.

Vagn Henning's picture

I think it's about time EDGE bans you.

To play it means having to buy it, thus supporting a developer which went ahead and released an unfinished game. Why would we want to do that? It sends out the message that we think it is ok for developers to do that. Which I am sure you agree is not.
I do believe that on occasion the reviewer does sound as though he has a personal vendetta against a game and this does make the review come off as a little unprofessional and biased. So maybe this is something they can consider in the future.

I have put about 30 hours into the single player game on PC and have yet to encounter a single bug. It's unfortunate that they could have ported it better to PC, and the NPC's seem to have better voice actors than the main characters, but it's still a great game. It is not even close to a 3/10, and it is patently clear to anyone that has actually played this game, and every other reviewer in the industry, that Edge has an issue with Techland in general and it is letting it effect their review score.

fatherofthenoo's picture

I wonder if it is one of those games that was initially designed with the PC in mind. It wouldn't be the first time that console versions have been inferior. Why would you think that EDGE would have an issue with Techland itself? 3/10 is extremely low when you compare it to other review scores but on the whole, reviewers have labelled it as average, and without the promotion and inclusion of zombies, this game would have probably tanked. I'm the kind of person that likes to see a game to well based on its quality, and on this occasion this does not appear to be the case.

CaptainQuint's picture

Heh heh, do I bother you do I? Water off a duck's back, lad.

Vagn Henning's picture

If it's me you're asking? It's your calling me "daft". By all means play DI til you swoon and defend it as vigorously as you like (unlike you I am not bothered by others having different tastes than my own). But don't call me daft!
Whether EDGE thinks it's OK for you to tell them to fuck themselves is their call but it definitely does not contribute to a pleasant atmosphere...
