Glen Schofield, general manager of Visceral Games, has revealed that the studio’s 2008 survival horror release Dead Space has sold around 1.4 million copies to date.
The new IP made its debut on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in October last year to critical acclaim, and Schofield says he’s happy with how the title has performed at retail.
"I'm happy with that, based on the economy," Schofield told GameSpot. "Last year could've been one of the greatest launch years in the history of video games around October time, but it was a year where people bought less games than they normally would.
“Do I wish it sold more? Absolutely. But the critical acclaim and the number of awards - we're at 75 and counting now - have made [Dead Space] bigger than just the number of sales. If you look at used sales and rentals, we're looking at probably three or four million people who have played the game."
While Visceral, formerly EA Redwood Shores, has yet to confirm a direct sequel to the title, Wii series entry Dead Space: Extraction has been announced for release later this year, and Schofield insisted there is a market for adult-themed games on Nintendo's console.
"If you look back at Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles and Resident Evil 4 for the Wii, those sold close to a million and over a million," he said. "MadWorld, to me, personally it's an art piece, and after a while, I got really tired of the art look. For me, I just couldn't take the black and white. So I don't think it's a matter of there not being a market, because soon there will be 60 million Wiis out there."
The film, Dead Space "Downfall" on Blu-Ray was good too.
I think the production value shine of this game has led to its overrated status, nonetheless, grats to a studio that once dwelled in license-hell. Dead Space was definitely a step in the right direction, and I'm glad EA was rewarded for its origianl IP efforts.
I agree a totally outstanding game, to me it reminded me of the first time I played the Resident Evil games, a complete fresh experience, I truly hope the game keeps selling, I for one constantly recommend the game to co-workers and friends since its a game that people deserve to play.
What an outstanding game. It's rare to find a game of this caliber. Really brings back memories of the late 90s and early 2000s. It's a shame there aren't more games of this quality. Thank you Visceral.
