Activision Blizzard CEO Robert Kotick says the all-but-official DJ Hero is slated for release in 2009.
Speaking to CNBC reporters from the Davos 2009 World Economic Forum in Switzerland, Kotick stated, "We have this product called DJ Hero coming out later this year, which is a turntable that you can actually play competitively and spin discs and mix songs, so you're definitely seeing physical interface starting to have a real impact on the consumer."
It's the first time that Kotick has spoken openly about the game, which Activision has yet to formally announce. The game is part of Activision's goal to spin-off and expand the Guitar Hero franchise into new areas.
Elsewhere in the interview, Kotick noted that Activision's way of making games is formulaic, but in the end it's highly effective from a commercial standpoint.
"I've been accused of taking all the fun out of making videogames, because [of] the process that we use," he said. "We spend a lot of time talking to the consumer, using what are much more the tools of a typical packaged goods company like a Proctor & Gamble, to really understand the tastes and the interests of our consumers and our audiences. We spend a lot of time with the audience, and I think that's what really shapes our product strategy."
Awww... he's gonna milk the "Hero" franchise to death.
This is a joke.
That side of his face was talking to the investing community who couldn't care less about originality/innovation. Among those circles (which matter a lot) he is commended for the job of bringing Activision to the forefront... however, i wonder if Activision is reaching that point where their seemingly blind chase of profitability gains them the distrust/dislike of the gaming community.
These are the people that jettisoned a series of games upon merging because they lacked that... potential for sequels or however they put it.
Now I finally understand how the real guitarists feel about Guitar Hero. I would gladly go back in time and give back every hour I spent playing Parappa the Rapper if it meant the music/rhythm genre would never exist and eventually spawn this awful product.
Oh well, time to develop and release Crass Game Developer CEO Cross-Genre Franchise Milking Cash-In Hero, give this clown a taste of his own medicine.
