Doom 3 source code released

Id Software has released the source code for its 2004 shooter Doom 3.

The release was announced by Todd Hollenshead, president of the company, on Twitter last night. Id confirmed it would release the source code in August, continuing its tradition of releasing old engines when a new one is released. Following the release last month of Rage, which runs on Id Tech 5, Id co-founder John Carmack confirmed that the code was ready, but was awaiting legal clearance.

That was then held up when lawyers expressed concern over Carmack's Reverse, a shadow stencilling technique Carmack discovered independently when working on the game but which had already been patented by Creative Labs. The Id co-founder duly rewrote the code and it is now available to all at the source link below.
