Doublesix studio head James Brooksby has called on the platform holders to make digital sales figures publicly available.

Speaking as sales of the studio’s PSN arena-based score-attack shooter Burn Zombie Burn passed 70,000 sales, Brooksby said the current lack of sales transparency “is hindering the development” of digital distribution channels.

“We’re clearly delighted that Burn Zombie Burn is performing well. It’s our first experience of digital console publishing and we’ve found the entire process very exciting and rewarding,” he said.

“However, I do wish that all the platform owners would make their digital sales figures public. We feel this lack of transparency is hindering the development of these channels… As a developer trying to decide which platforms to develop for, as well as what type of games to make, we’re currently in the dark regarding real sales performance for digital platforms and that makes it increasingly difficult to make realistic plans.

“I’d like to see some kind of verified sales charts on all digital systems to encourage more developers to support these channels and to help make sensible investment decisions,” he added.

Doublesix also noted that Burn Zombie Burn’s sales tally had hit the “studio’s internal benchmark for success,” and that it believes the longer life cycle of digitally distributed titles mean the game “will reach a significantly higher lifetime figure.”

We’ve contacted the platform holders to see if they have any plans to make digital sales figures publicly available, and to see whether they agree with Brooksby’s suggestion that their platforms are being held back by the decision not to do so at present.

Definitely agree--couldn't agree more even if I tried. Let's start with the iPhone.

It's always bemused me why we don't get these figures being released. Giving out the sales data on these games would be a good thing says I.
