Over two million Japanese gamers pre-ordered Square Enix’s Dragon Quest IX, according to reports translated by Andriasang.
The latest entry in the long-running RPG franchise released alongside a red DSi in Japan on Saturday, and is expected to boost DSi sales/trade-ups in the country.
Developed by Professor Layton house Level-5, the title was originally scheduled to launch in Japan in March 2009, but was delayed due to a “severe business environment for amusement.”
Back in April Square Enix announced that Dragon Quest was the publisher’s second bestselling franchise ever, having shifted 47 million units.
Update: A further Andriasang report says Dragon Quest IX sold over 2.3 million copies in its first two days of availability.
Weekend sales hit 2,318,932 copies, according to Media create data, while Famitsu says the title shifted 2,343,440 units.
boost trade-ups? Why?
Does it only run on the DSi? I hope not. If it does run on DS-Lite, why would it boost trade-ups?
Anyway, I am looking forward to this game reaching the UK.
The main game itself will only require a regular DS so you should be ok there, but Square-Enix has mentioned that the possiblity exits for DLC for the game via the DSi Ware shop.
