Net income was 6 billion yen ($61 million) for the first fiscal half, up from 5.2 billion yen for the same period a year ago. Net sales were down to 68 billion yen from 72.3 billion.
Operating income was down slightly to 9.4 billion yen from 9.8 billion yen.
By segment, sales in offline games were down to 16.6 billion yen from 20.4 billion yen a year ago. Online game revenues were virtually flat at 5.3 billion yen.
Square-Enix's business was largely focused on the domestic Japanese market during the six-month period, with 86 percent of revenues coming from the firm's home territory. North America made up 10 percent, Europe (PAL) 7 percent and "Asia, etc." 1 percent.
Total software unit sales for April-September 2008 were 4.98 million, down from 6.92 million a year prior.
The top-selling title for the company during the period was Dragon Quest V for DS. Square-Enix's software sales by units for the period is as follows:
- Dragon Quest V (DS): 1.15 million
- Crisis Core--Final Fantasy VII (PSP): 620,000 (1.92 million life-to-date)
- Final Fantasy IV (DS): 440,000 (1.04 million life-to-date)
- Infinite Undiscovery (Xbox 360): 410,000
- Final Fantasy Tactics A2 (DS): 320,000 (620,000 life-to-date)
- Dragon Quest IV (DS): 260,000 (1.42 million life-to-date)
- The World Ends With You (DS): 160,000 (370,000 life-to-date)
- Dragon Quest Sword (Wii): 100,000 (710,000 life-to-date)
- Chocobo's Dungeon (Wii): 70,000 (160,000 life-to-date)
- Sigma Harmonics (DS): 70,000
- Nanashi No Game (DS): 60,000
- Front Mission 2009 (DS): 50,000
- "Others": 1.27 million
For the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009, Square-Enix expects net sales of 160 billion yen, operating income of 21 billion yen and net income of 12 billion yen.
The firm also expects full-year software unit sales to drop to 11.5 million from 14.4 million a year ago.
