The Nintendo DS has set a new UK record for the biggest volume of hardware sales in a single week.
Figures provided by ELSPA and ChartTrack show that for the week ending December 6, Nintendo’s handheld sold more units than any other console in UK history.
In doing so the DS has surpassed its own record as fastest selling console in a single week, which it set last December. Prior to this, the record belonged to the PSP, which had held the achievement since its UK launch back in Sep 2005.
ChartTrack company director Dorian Bloch confirmed the news to MCV, claiming that “the DS Lite has beaten its own record, almost exactly a year after it first took the title. It wasn’t a huge jump, but it bodes well for the remaining weeks. The interesting thing is that we can now assume that if there is still some DS Lite stock in the land in the next couple of weeks, the record will go again.”
I remember when it first came out.
It was large, seemed gimicky and was not a sucessor to the GBA.
It seemed very virtual boy.
The general feeling seemed to be, "It'll never last"
Crazy, eh?
Well it is Christmas, everyone and his mum will be getting one of these in their stocking again this year. Just goes to show that Nintendo are bang on the money in term of inclusive gaming :D With the DS and Wii Good to see.
I wonder how long it'll be before Microsoft join the handheld race ?
In a sense you could say they are already there, just not active about it. They have their Zune music player, which if it doesn't already, will be getting XNA support.
If the PSP and DS are taking sales speed records, I find it interesting that, just like in Japan, the UK seems to prefer handhelds over TV consoles. I'd be curious to see the hadnhelds vs. TV console breakdown by major region, as I never imagined the UK as a handheld-type market until now.
will the DS factor never end? nintendo truly have a work of art (in a business sense) there. it would be easier to give them their own mint.
