While Nintendo has released numerous DSi-specific downloadable games via its DSiWare service, a new report suggests that the platform holder is prepared to let third-party publishers take the lead in offering DSi-only retail software beginning this fall.
Kotaku sources claim that DSi-only games will be visually distinct from past DS products, coming packaged in all-white game cases as opposed to the grey cases currently offered with DS games. Cases will carry a warning about the software’s DSi-only compatibility and game-cards themselves will use a similar white plastic.
The DSi launched in Japan on November 1 last year and in other territories this April. Nintendo's latest quarterly financial report, which was released in late July, revealed that global DSi sales had hit 6.68 million units life-to-date.
A Nintendo spokesperson told us that while DSi-only retail titles are in development, a fall launch period is “very much rumour and speculation.”
Before the DSi launched Nintendo said that there may be DSi-only software eventually.
